Cycling: Tirreno-Adriatico: Roglic wins in Trevi, Thomas new overall leader

Slovenian cycling professional Primoz Roglic has won the third leg of the stage race Tirreno-Adriatico. The 28-year-old from Team LottoNL-Jumbo won after 234 km from Follonica to Trevi and a selective final ramp ahead of the British Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott).

The new overall leader is Yates’ fellow countryman Geraint Thomas from the scandal-stricken Sky team, ahead of Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet (Belgium/BMC) and his British team mate Christopher Froome (three seconds back).

Froome only takes part in the race in Italy for the second time. The Briton, who had been positively tested in a doping test during his Vuelta triumph in September, wants to prepare for the Giro d’ Italia in May.

On Saturday the fourth stage leads over 219 km from Foligno up to the 1345 m high mountain arrival in Sarnano Sassotetto.
