Master Red Bull Munich started with a surprising defeat in the play-off quarter-finals of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The main round winner was defeated by Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven after extra time with 3:4 (2:0,0:1,1:2,0:1).

The Nuremberg Ice Tigers had to concede defeats to the Cologne sharks at the start of the best-of-seven series 1:4 (1:2,0:1,0:1), after the lead the ERC Ingolstadt lost 1:3 (0:0,1:0,0,0:3) against the Mannheim eagles. On the other hand, the second place in the main round was played by the second polar bear Berlin 4:1 (0:0,2:1,2:0) against runner-up Grizzly’s Wolfsburg.

Olympic silver medallist Frank Mauer (5th) and goal scorer Michael Wolf (11th) shot the Munich team seemingly calmly in the lead. The underdog from the north, however, fought his way back into the game through Jason Bast’s 25th goal, turning the match around thanks to Chris Rumble (51st) and Jan Urbas (55th). In the Red Bull final offensive, however, Mauer (60th) came close again and saved his team in extra time – Nicholas Jensen scored the winning goal for Bremerhaven after 3:18 minutes in overtime.

For Cologne, Pyeongchang-Held Felix Schütz with two goals (3rd/60th) was the winner. David Wolf (52nd), Davin Setoguchi (52nd) and Marcus Kink (60th) turned the game in Ingolstadt in favour of Adler.

After the first period in Berlin Louis-Marc Aubry (27th/47th), Mark Olver (29th) and Jamison MacQueen (57th) met for the hosts. Stephen Dixon (33rd) scored the only goal for the runners-up in the last two years.

Cologne will receive Nuremberg on Thursday for the second game in the cathedral city, the other games of the second matchday will take place on Friday (every 7.30 pm).
