American League MVP and World Series Champion Jose Altuve apparently faces a contract extension with the Houston Astros. To hold the Second Baseman, the team wants to reach deep into their pockets.
Altuve is said to have signed a contract with the reigning champion for five years and 150 million dollars. This reports mlb.com. It would be the most expensive deal in franchise history – and would run counter to the trend in this off-season, where teams had focused on shorter and less lucrative contracts.
The new contract will start in 2020 and would bind the 27-year-old to the team until 2025. In the coming season Altuve earns six million dollars, in 2019 the Astros hold an option for 6.5 million dollars.
Altuve is only the sixth player in the history of MLB to sign a $30 million per year contract. Four players were pitcher, only Miguel Cabrera could sign a similar contract as a field player.
The five-time All-Star Altuve signed as a Free Agent with the Astros in 2007. In the last four years, he led the MLB in the hits category, and in 2017 he was voted MVP after an average of .346 and 24 home runs.
