MLB: Alex Cobb signs record contract with Baltimore Orioles

Alex Cobb has found a new team. The pitcher will sign a $60 million four-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles. Only the obligatory medical check is still pending.

After a good 2017 season in the service of the Tampa Bay Rays, the right-hander had to wait a long time for a new club. Now he’s staying in the American League after all.

The 30-year-old was 12-10 last year with a 3.66 ERA of 29 starts, setting career records for victories, games and innings (179 1/3).

Cobb pitched a full season in 2017 for the first time since his Tommy John Surgery in 2015. He returned late in 2016 and was far from back with an 8.59 ERA and a 1-2 balance.

In his six years with the Rays, he achieved a 48-35 record, the fifth most victories in the franchise’s history. His 3.50 ERA is meanwhile even the second best of the Rays.

60 million over four years is Baltimore’s record total volume and average annual salary for a free agent pitcher.
