The US Masters is one of four major tournaments and always the first of the season. It is also the only one of these tournaments that is held every year on the same grounds, the Augusta National Golf Club.

Unlike the other majors, the Masters is an invitational tournament. In order to be able to participate, a golfer must first receive an official invitation from the organizers. However, there are also fixed rules that guarantee participation. For example, all Masters winners have a lifelong starting right, while winners of other major tournaments qualify for five years. The last criterion is the current world ranking, from which the best 50 players may participate.

The Masters is also known for a special trophy that the winner receives: One green jacket. The winner may take this home for a year after the tournament before it is returned to the clubhouse. There it can be worn during visits to the facility.
