MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates succeeds in craziest double play of the season

Pittsburgh Pirates (12-8) lost 2-1 to Philadelphia Phillies (12-7) on Friday evening, but this was probably the strangest double play of the season.

With runners in the corners of the eighth inning, Pirates Reliever George Kontos tried to catch Phillies-Outfielder Rhys Hoskins at first base. But as Odubel Herrera moved further and further away from third base, the Bucs quickly concentrated on him.

After a successful day at Herrera, Hoskins probably didn’t have the number of outs in mind, which is why he was also caught on his way to third base. Just normal 1-3-4-2-5-8-7 double-play.

Cesar Hernandez, however, ensured the twelfth victory of the Phillies in the eighth inning this season. With a double he first brought himself into position before he set himself 2:1 in a Herrera triple.

“Cesar is our rock,” said his manager Gabe Kapler after the game. “He always finds ways to get on base. It is also impressive how he works his way from a 0-2 to a 3-2.

Herrera also recorded a single in the sixth inning, expanding a series of games in which he reached the bases to 21. He managed such a run already for the fourth time in his career, thus he holds at the fourth longest active run of the MLB.
