MLB: Chicago Cubs give Ben Zobrist a break – replacement points out

The Chicago Cubs have placed their second baseman Ben Zobrist on the 10-day disabled list. This gives the 36-year-old, who has been struggling with back problems for several months, a long awaited break. Zobrist’s replacement David Bote played the same number in his MLB debut on Saturday evening.

Zobrist played his last game for the Cubs over a week ago and has since been spared by manager Joe Maddon. The 2016 World Series MVP has had a batting average of .326 and a home run so far.

The triple All-Star Zobrist will not be available to the Cubs until next Saturday at the earliest.

Instead of Zobrist, David Bote from the Cubs farm system came to his first assignment in the Big Leagues. At his first at-bat, the 25-year-old beat Rockies starter Tyler Anderson (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) in a double. “I wondered,’Did this just really happen?'” said messenger after the game. “Then I saw my teammates cheering for me. A really cool feeling.”

The game was lost for the Cubs due to a mixed performance of starter Yu Darvish (4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) with 2:5.
