MLB: After No-Hitter: Sean Manaea sets record against Houston Astros

Sean Manaea of the Oakland Athletics (14-14) has followed up his no-hitter from last weekend with another strong performance. In his 8-1 win over the Houston Astros (17-10), he did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, setting a new franchise record.

Manaea (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, BB, 7 K) sent the Astros’ entire batting order back to the bench on their first attempt, placing 14 innings without a hit across the board. This had never been achieved before by any other pitcher of the Athletics: John Odom’s previous record was 13th place.

“There have been some really good pitcher in the history of the A’s, that’s why he can be really proud of it”, manager Bob Melvin said enthusiastically. “That he doesn’t feel any hangover effect is more than impressive,” said Outfielder Chad Pinder.

26-year-old Manaea has not allowed an earned run in the last 18 innings and leads the American League with an ERA of 1.03. In addition, he has shown himself to be consistently persistent in his previous performances, pitching for at least seven innings on five of his six starts.

After their 14th victory in twelve defeats in the AL West, the Athletics are only in fourth place. Houston leads the division ahead of the Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners. Apart from AL West, there are only four teams with a positive record in the Central branch.
