MLB: Yoenis Cespedes destroys diamond chain at New York Mets bankruptcy

The New York Mets (17-11) lost 7-0 at home to Atlanta Braves (18-11) on Wednesday, falling back to second place in the National League East. A diamond chain from Mets-Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was also broken.

In the first inning, Cespedes started a slide into second base after beating a blooper into the short right field and turning it into a double. In the slide, however, his diamond chain broke and various diamonds landed in the infield.

Cespedes did not realize until late that his chain had been damaged, then tore it from his neck and threw it raging to the ground. TV cameras then showed the sparkling gems in the dirt of the infield. New York’s Second Baseman Asdrubal Cabrera and Second Base Umpire Bill Welke finally took action in the following half inning and found the diamonds.

Cespedes himself inspected the “accident site” himself a little later, but found nothing.
