The Los Angeles Dodgers (15-17) threw a Combined No-Hitter with four pitchers at the start of the “Mexico Series” 4-0 against the San Diego Padres (11-22) on Friday. It is the second No-No of the season after Sean Manaea of Oakland Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox without a hit.
Rookie starter Walker Buehler started at the Estadio de Beisbol in Monterrey/Mexico with six no-hit innings. He allowed three walks and came up with eight strikeouts.
“He threw two different breaking balls for strikes on either side of the plate. And he threw 98 to 99 miles per hour,” analyzed Padres-First baseman Eric Hosmer Buehlers presentation. “It’s hard sometimes to praise an opponent’s pitcher, but he threw a good game and all his pitches worked on both sides of the board. Sometimes you just have to pay respect to your opponent.”
Afterwards the relievers Tony Cingrani (2 BB, SO), Yimi Garcia (2 SO) and finally Adam Liberatore (2 SO) pitched another inning for the 23rd No-Hitter in the history of the Dodgers – most of them in the MLB. However, it is the first of the franchises with more than one pitcher.
“It was great,” said Liberatore, who was also recently appointed to the MLB squad: “I was aware of the situation in which I came in. “I just wanted to do my best, throw as hard as I could and get the three outs without screwing it up.”
Clayton Kershaw last pitched a no-hitter for the Dodgers against the Colorado Rockies in June 2014. In the history of the MLB, however, it was the twelfth Combined No-Hitter overall.
The Dodgers did the rest on the offensive in the first and second innings: Matt Kemp managed an RBI single in the first inning, while Chris Taylor and Kike Hernandez contributed solo Homuns in the second. Chase Utley scored the last run on an RBI single by Alex Verdugo.
Fernando Valenzuela, the former Dodgers star pitcher, who threw the ceremonial first pitch before the game, had opened the game. The Mexican himself threw a no-hitter for the Dodgers against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1990.
