While the Cleveland Browns have already publicly declared their rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield number 2, the jets are taking a different path: number 3 overall pick Sam Darnold could quickly slip into the starter role in New York.
This was reported by ESPN reporter Dianna Russini. Jets coach Todd Bowles has therefore made it clear that this is an “open competition” – and that Darnold can very well win the starter job for Week 1 of the Regular Season.
Should the Darnold, who had to struggle with turnover difficulties in college among other things, not yet be ready at the beginning of September, the jets have however taken good precautions: Routine Josh McCown was held, in addition, Gang Green grabbed himself in the Free Agency Ex-Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. So even if McCown gets hurt, New York Darnold could still be out there.
Darnold himself focuses on learning the Playbook, as he made clear to ESPN reporter Rich Cimini: “You have to earn the respect. I’m not coming here asking for this. I need to know what position I’m in. I’m a rookie, I understand that – but at the same time I’m also a quarterback and have to be a leader on and off the pitch.”
