MLB: Jersey by Pitcher legend Sandy Koufax auctioned for a record sum

A jersey by pitcher legend Sandy Koufax was auctioned on Saturday for $429,625. This is a new record for Los Angeles Dodgers memorabilia.

The jersey is a 1963 Dodgers away kit signed “1963 W.S. Champs”. The winner of the auction is not known.

In 1963 Koufax won the Cy Young Award, the MVP and the World Series MVP. The left-hander led the National League in Siegen (25), Strikeouts (306) and ERA (1.88). In addition, he threw eleven shutouts, which is still a record for a left-hander in one season.

He threw a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants and achieved 15 strikeouts in Game 1 of the World Series, which the Dodgers won in four games against the New York Yankees.

“The rarity of a jersey worn in-game by Koufax combined with the impeccable authenticity and the fact that it is perhaps its best season make this jersey truly something special,” Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions, the auction house that conducted the bidding competition, told ESPN.
