NBA: New Head Coach for Schröder confirmed

The Atlanta Hawks have a new head coach. After the departure of long-time coach Mike Budenholzer, Llyod Pierce will take over the job on the sideline in Atlanta. This was officially announced by Dennis Schröder’s team.

According to information from ESPN, this is a three-year contract with an option for another season.

Pierce was assistant coach under Brett Brown at the Philadelphia 76ers for the last five years and helped the Sixers clinch 52 victories and reach the Conference Semifinals this season. There they played five games against Boston Celtics.

“It was important for us to find a coach who can work well with young players and develop them,” explained General Manager Trevis Schlenk. “Pierce meets all requirements and we are delighted that he will lead the Atlanta Hawks in the future.”

Prior to Philadelphia, Pierce also spent time as an assistant to the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers.

“It’s an honor to be the new head coach of the Hawks,” Pierce is quoted in a statement. “This opportunity suits me very well and I firmly believe I can help Trevis with his plan to bring a championship to Atlanta.”

The Hawks are currently in rebuild and finished the season with just 24 wins, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2006/2007. For this the Hawks consider first-round picks in the coming draft.
