The Boston Red Sox (28-13) lost to Oakland Athletics (20-21) 5-6 on Monday, losing the lead in the American League East. The guests from California could rely on their star pitcher and three home runs.
The A’s opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo Homun by Matt Joyce against Sox starter Rick Porcello (6 IP, 5 ER). The Sox then fought back with two runs, but in the fourth inning Oakland slowly pulled away and scored three runs in a row. In the sixth and eighth innings, Matt Olson and Khris Davis each followed up with solo homuns.
On the mound, Sean Manaea, who had recently pitched a no-hitter against Boston, gave four runs (3 ER) in six innings, paving the way for the A’s to win away. Manaea managed a personal turnaround, because in his previous 6 1/3 innings in Fenway Park the left-hander had given 15 Earned Runs altogether.
“That was just one of the things I had to overcome and that I could not shy away from – you have to confront such fears directly.
“He was good in a difficult place for pitcher,” Manager Bob Melvin praised his Ace. “You don’t go out every day and throw a no-hitter against this team. But all in all he left the game with a tour of this ball park. That was a pretty good job.”
After Manaeas departure Setup Man Yusmeiro Petit (2 IP, ER) and Closer Blake Treinen (IP) brought it home more or less sovereign. The A’s now have a record of 14-0 when they were leading after seven innings.
With their defeat, the Red Sox now occupy second place in the AL East, half a game behind the New York Yankees (28-12), who had no matches on Monday.
