MLB: Diamondbacks: Pollock fails with thumb fracture for weeks

A.J. Pollock of the Arizona Diamondbacks threatens a long break. A thumb fracture could knock the outfielder out for up to two months.

Pollock injured his thumb on Monday during a failed pike jump after a line drive by Tyler Saladino of the Milwaukee Brewers. The play resulted in an inside-the-park Homun, the D-backs lost the game 2:7, as did Pollock.

Snakes manager Torey Lovullo explained that Pollock has suffered a so-called tear-off fracture, i.e. a tendon or ligament has been severed from the bone. Therefore, the downtime is expected to be four to eight weeks.

Pollock leads the team with a strike average of .293, eleven home runs and 33 RBI. He was All-Star in 2015, but has never played more than 112 games since then due to injury.

“It’s hard to lose anyone,” said General Manager Mike Hazen, who continued: “but losing A.J. is a particularly hard blow, especially in its current form. But no one will feel sorry for us. We have to compensate for the failure and look ahead.”

In 2016 Pollock played only twelve games due to an elbow fracture, in 2017 he missed almost two months with a groin injury. The current injury hits Arizona particularly hard as they only beat .223 – the league’s worst score – as a team.
