The New York Yankees (31-13) made history with their 10:5 victory over the Texas Rangers (18-31) on Monday in Arlington. For the first time, the Bronx Bombers have won three games in a row with at least four home runs. A rookie also celebrated a premiere.
Three days before his 45th birthday, Bartolo Colon and the Yankees met a team he traditionally never looked good against (6.11 ERA over 20 starts). And that should not change this time either.
The Yankees opened the shooting festival with an RBI double by Neil Walker, followed by a 2-run homun by Rookie Gleyber Torres. Walker himself hit a home run in the fourth inning before Rougned Odor scored a 4-4 3-run shot for the Rangers.
The Yankees regained the lead in the fifth inning through Aaron Judge’s twelfth home run of the season. In the sixth, Torres scored his two home run, beating several long balls in one game for the first time in his young career. Aaron Hicks finally finished with a 2-run shot in the ninth inning.
Torres became the second youngest player (21 years, 159 days) in the history of the Yankees to win a multi-homerun game. The youngest was Mickey Mantle (20 years, 296 days).
“My lineup is fantastic,” Torres said: “Everyone does their job, everyone helps the team. I’m also just trying to help my team by contributing something – on the plate or on the defensive. I’m trying to help and win.”
There were also words of appreciation from the opponent. Rangers manager Jeff Banister told reporters: “This lineup is strong. You look down from top to bottom in this lineup and they make an average of five and a half runs. This is a challenge for many teams. Bartolo threw some very good pitches, but he also hit some home runs, two of them to a young guy who’s really hot and swings the bat well.”
Colon held out 5 1/3 innings, but made six runs (8h) on four home runs. His opponent, Masahiro Tanaka, meanwhile fought his way through five innings (4 ER) and also played two long balls, but held out long enough for the victory (5-2).
Tanaka explained his rather weak idea as follows: “I didn’t have my shard today. I was very inconsistent. I am very frustrated because otherwise we are playing very well but I was not able to pitch effectively”.
With their success in Texas, the Yankees continue to have the best record in baseball and are now half a game ahead of the Boston Red Sox (32-15) in the American League East.
