The Texas Rangers (20-31) beat the New York Yankees (31-15) 12:10 thanks to two big chases and won the home series at the same time. For the Bronx Bombers, this marks the end of a long series of successes.
The Yankees had already led 4:0 and 10:5, but the hosts did not let up on both occasions and came back thanks to an outstanding offensive.
The ultimate turnaround came for Texas in the sixth inning. First Isiah Kiner-Falefa had scored a 10:8 walk on loaded bases, then Jurickson Profar completely cleared the bases with a 3-Run-Double to 11:10 for the Rangers.
“We believe we have a great team,” Profar said. “We haven’t shown that yet, but I still think we have a great team. The fact that we have shown it today will help our self-confidence enormously. We know we can. The Yankees are the best team. And our team seems to play well against good teams. We have to do this against every team.”
Rangers-Outfielder Nomar Mazara explained his team’s success as follows: “We managed to push the lineup forward with great at bats. That’s the way we have to play. Whether we lead or not, we must always have the same attitude and try to make a difference in every inning. “It doesn’t matter what the score is.”
Before that, the Yankees’ offense was brilliant. Didi Gregorius, Neil Walker, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge all beat home runs, expanding an impressive series for the Yankees: For the first time ever, they always hit at least three home runs in five consecutive games.
Of course, it wasn’t enough because the pitching failed. CC Sabathia did not come out of the fifth inning (4 1/3 IP) and gave seven runs, after that Chasen Shreve (1/3 IP, 2 ER), David Robertson (2/3 IP, 2 ER) and Dellin Betances (2 IP, ER) allowed five more runs. It was Robertson’s fourth blown save this season.
For the Yankees, who lost the series in Arlington/Texas with 1-2, it is also the first series defeat after eight successful series in a row. They slipped to second place in the AL East, 1 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers, in turn, are 12 1/2 games behind at the end of the AL West.
