MLB: Red Sox must be separating from Hanley Ramirez

The Boston Red Sox are apparently separating from Designated Hitter and First Baseman Hanley Ramirez. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the 34-year-old will be put on the DFA list on Friday.

Players on the DFA (Designated For Assignment) list will be removed from a team of 40 players with immediate effect. The Red Sox now have seven days to release Ramirez or trade.

Ramirez beat six home runs and 29 RBIs in 44 games this season at a batting average of 0.254. He came to Boston in 2015 from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Between 2008 and 2010 Ramirez (then with the Miami Marlins) was elected All-Star. Ramirez’s contract with the Red Sox would have expired by the end of this year.

With the separation from Ramirez, the Red Sox could make room for Dustin Pedroia, who is back on his left knee after surgery. Red Sox manager Alex Cora praised Pedroia’s “commitment, the quality of his At-Bats and his defensive play”.

Pedroia will “definitely play one of the two games on Friday or Saturday against the Atlanta Braves,” said Cora, who has a particularly close relationship with Pedroia.
