Dirk Nowitzki has commented that his Dallas Mavericks in the Free Agency traditionally have problems signing good players. That is why he must also question himself.
According to Nowitzki, the fact that the Mavericks often do not get prominent free agents cannot have financial reasons, since every franchise plans with the same cap space. “And when you have cap space, other teams usually have it too – so players usually have several options. And unfortunately, those we are interested in are deciding against us,” he told Dallas Morning News.
Therefore, the situation of recent years must be examined carefully and the right conclusions drawn for the future. “Sometimes it hit us hard that we didn’t get the big names we wanted. But that must be one of them in this league.”
What exactly is the reason for this, the German could not name either. “But when something like this happens on a regular basis, everyone has to look in the mirror and question themselves. What can we do better? Is it Dirk? On the owner? Management? The players? At our training facilities or even at the city?”
The Mavericks finished the last Regular Season with a score of 24-58 and missed the playoffs for the second time in a row. Nowitzki, however, plans to continue next season – although he will turn 40 on June 19.
