Tyronn Lue spoke about his future as head coach after the final defeat against the Golden State Warriors. He expected to remain on the sidelines of the Cavaliers. He also talked about his health.
“Yes, I do,” he replied to the reporters after Game 4 of the finals when asked if he would expect to return as head coach next season. His contract runs until 2021, but after his team again had no chance in the finals, many experts counted the 41-year-old.
However, Lue does not want to be influenced by this – nor does he want to be influenced by the question whether LeBron James will still play in his team next season or not. “I had a lot of problems during the season, so I could have let myself down. But that was never an option,” Lue said as well.
Lue had had to take some time off during the season because he was suffering from anxiety. That’s why he missed nine games. “But even if I hadn’t been back to 100 percent, I knew I’d be back for the playoffs. Because this is my time. I didn’t want to put our coaches and players in the situation without a head coach. That’s why I fought my way through, because that’s what champions do.”
Commenting on the reasons for his time-out, he said: “I am sometimes too hard on myself. And I sometimes wonder why I’ve only been head coach for two and a half years – it feels like ten or 15 years. It’s hard sometimes. But I can and will become even better at dealing with it properly.”
