MLB: Biceps rupture! Season off for Miguel Cabrera

For Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers the season is over. The first baseman suffered a torn tendon in his biceps and needs surgery.

Cabrera left the game early in the third inning of Detroit’s 4-6 defeat by the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. According to first reports, it was a strain, but an MRI revealed the rupture.

Cabrera will have surgery this week and miss the rest of the season. “He feels really, really bad,” said Manager Ron Gardenhire. “He feels like he’s abandoning his people.”

Cabrera injured himself with a swing against a slider of Twins pitcher Jake Odorizzi. He then headed straight for Dugout, his left arm hanging down. He was then led into the cabin by carers.

“We’re all kind of shocked,” said Outfielder JaCoby Jones. You just don’t think anything like this is going to happen to Miguel Cabrera, especially on a swing.”

For Cabrera it is the sad climax of a season full of injury problems. He used to miss three games a year with pain in his now torn biceps, then he sat outside for 26 games with a strain in his big hamstring and also had back problems during that time.

Cabrera returned to the squad on June 1st, beating .244 with an RBI since his return. Overall, he beat .301 this year with three home runs and 22 RBI.

Cabrera had only signed a new eight-year contract in 2016. Until 2023, the 35-year-old is still guaranteed 192 million dollars.
