MLB: Longoria opts for hand surgery

Evan Longoria has decided to have surgery to treat a metacarpal fracture. The Third Baseman will probably be missing from the San Francisco Giants for six to eight weeks.

Longoria suffered the injury on Thursday in a hit-by-pitch against Miami Marlins and pitcher Dan Straily. The former Tampa Bay Rays player was then examined in Los Angeles and said no surgery was necessary.

However, the operation could shorten his rehabilitation time, as he himself said. “Hopefully I’ll be back shortly after the All-Star break,” Longoria said on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Dodgers series. “It shouldn’t be too long before I can start my construction program. “Once the scar heals, it’s all about pain management.”

“It’s best to speak from six to eight weeks, but it’s hard for me to convey this to myself. I will definitely push so I’ll be back shortly after the All-Star break,” Longoria continued.

The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles and will be performed by hand specialist Steven Shin. A permanent needle is inserted into the hand.
