MLB: NY Managing Director suffers from cancer again

Sandy Alderson is relieved of his New York Mets post. The general manager was diagnosed with another cancer, which he will now have intensively treated.

Alderson and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon announced this at a press conference on Tuesday.

“With regard to the future, I would say two things: First, my health is uncertain despite a good prognosis,” said Alderson (70), who had only signed an extension of the contract in December. “Second, when I look at the benefits, I’m not sure a return is guaranteed.”

When asked if he wanted his GM back, Wilpon said: “I think his health and his family come first.

In the meantime, Assistant GM John Ricco and Special Assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya will lead the day-to-day operations of the Mets. Ricciardi was GM of the Toronto Blue Jays from 2001 to 2009, while Minaya was even Alderson’s predecessor as GM of the Mets.

Alderson had been GM of the Mets since late 2010 and had already developed cancer by late 2015. At that time he had an operation followed by chemotherapy, but remained in office.

“One difference between then and now is that it happened in the offseason,” Alderson said: “I had the surgery in the offseason and parts of chemotherapy too. This is much easier to manage in the offseason. I had the power of decision at that time, but that will not be the case now. If people want to call me, they are welcome to do so. But at the same time, I won’t be involved in daily business.”
