NBA: Media: Mavs renounce Nowitzkis team option

The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly waived the team option in Dirk Nowitzki’s contract. Thus it becomes Unrestricted Free Aget – but probably only on paper.

That’s what the New York Times reports. Accordingly, the Mavs have allowed the $5 million option withdrawal period for the coming season to expire. The reason: More salary flexibility in the hunt for Free Agent DeAndre Jordan.

On paper, the German now becomes an unrestricted free agent. But it is almost impossible that he will change teams. Instead, he and the Mavs will wait with a new contract and ultimately fix the salary that is “left over”. This approach has been used by the Texans and Dirk several times in recent years.

Nowitzki enters his 21st season with the Mavs. This is a record – no player has played for so long for only one franchise in the NBA.
