MLB: Cardinals dismissed manager Matheny

The St. Louis Cardinals have laid off their manager Mike Mathenis. The former benchmark coach Mike Shildt is now taking over the position on an interim basis.

In addition to Matheny, the Cardinals fired hitting coach John Mabry and his assistant Bill Mueller after their 2-8 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds. Their successors will be presented at a press conference on Sunday.

“These decisions are never easy, but we thought it needed a change in leadership,” explained John Mozeliak, President of the baseball business.

Matheny, who joined the Cardinals in 2012, had a contract until 2020 and is the first dismissed manager of the Cardinals since Joe Torre in 1995, starting his tenure with St. Louis four consecutive play-offs.

The search for a new manager will probably only begin in the offseason.
