Jacob deGrom has apparently had enough of the rumors about his person on the way to the Non-Waiver Trade Deadline on July 31. The agent of the starting pitcher of the New York Mets put the team under pressure in a statement.
The all-star pitcher is interested “in discussing a long-term partnership that would leave him in a Mets uniform for many years,” Brodie Van Wagenen, deGrom’s agent, told The Athletic. But the agent added: “If the Mets don’t share that interest, we think it would be best if they considered the possibility of a trade.”
Van Wagenen rowed back later on Monday in the New York Post, saying that his statement was not to be understood as a “demand for a trade”, but the announcement was clear.
DeGrom has been traded as a potential trade candidate for weeks, although no team has yet approached the Mets with a viable offer.
DeGrom will remain under team control until the end of the 2020 season, earning $7.4 million this season. He leads the National League with a 1.68 ERA, although the New York Mets are among the worse teams in the league.
