The Chicago Cubs and the Texas Rangers have agreed on a trade for relief pitcher Jesse Chavez. At the same time, however, they also put a top-reliever on the Disabled List.
Chavez allowed 22 Earned Runs over 56 1/3 innings (3.51 ERA) for the Rangers this season. In return, the Cubs send Minor League left-hander Tyler Thomas to Arlington. This is 3-5 with a Save and a 2.88 ERA over 15 bets, including 14 starts for Single-A South Bend.
“The word that comes to mind is versatility. You can let it start or stick it in the bullpen and it’s very good in both areas,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon praised his newcomer.
Shortly before the deal with the Rangers, the Cubs right-handers put Brandon Morrow on the 10-Day Disabled List. Morrow suffers from an inflammation of the biceps. The move, however, is retroactive to last Monday.
Asked if this was the Cubs’ last trade before the Non-Waiver Trade Deadline on July 31, Maddon said, “I don’t think this is the end. The front office just enjoys these trades too much.”
