MLB: NY top earner threatens long break

The New York Mets have put Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes back on the Disabled List. So far, however, it is not yet clear whether he will actually need surgery on both feet, as he himself stated on Saturday to the amazement of all those involved.

Before the Mets’ home game against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday evening (6-3 New York), an official statement from the team was expected, but a Mets spokesman pointed out that they were still waiting for a second opinion from another doctor.

But even after the game nothing had changed in this status. “We’re still waiting for a second doctor’s second opinion,” said manager Mickey Callaway. “You must gather all information and then make a decision. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where two doctors didn’t end up together and come to some conclusion.”

Cespedes underwent an MRI on Monday to see if he needed surgery to relieve chronic pain in both heels. The double All-Star had only returned from the DL on Friday after hip problems and had then explained that calcifications on both heels had been bothering him for 15 years and had also led to various injuries in recent years.

Should the operations take place, Cespedes would probably be out of action for eight to ten months and thus miss large parts of the coming season. The 32-year-old is in the second year of a four-year deal worth 110 million dollars.
