MLB: Turner sits after mental absence

Trea Turner was out in the Milwaukee Brewers (5-4 Milwaukee) for disciplinary reasons at the start of his Washington Nationals game on Tuesday. He was angry with his manager the day before.

Turner was hit in an at-bat on the bat in the 6-1 defeat of his national team on Monday, the ball jumped into the field and Turner just stopped. Afterwards he just went to the dugout without running to first base.

“I actually thought the ball hit his hand,” said manager Dave Martinez after the game. “The Umpire said that Turner had colored the ball. Then I wondered why he left the field. That’s when we tried to win a game,” Martinez continued, adding, “There’s a good chance he won’t play tomorrow.

Martinez put his words into action and indeed left Turner out. Instead of his Wilmer started Difo as a shortstop. Turner was only substituted as a pinch runner in the tenth inning and was finally picked off at the first base.

Martinez finally told reporters on Tuesday: “After yesterday, I had the feeling that Turner needed a day off. I wanted him to think about what he did. But we need Trea, and he’s a good player. I don’t ask these guys to be perfect, but I want them to be present. And I know he’s aware of that. I have great respect for him.”
