Isaac Bonga was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers this year and even got a guaranteed contract directly. In an interview, the youngster spoke about his first impressions of LeBron James and how the Lakers intend to use him.
In an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau, Bonga revealed what the Lakers’ plan was for him. “I’ll probably play more in the G-League to gain practice and experience,” said Bonga, who will spend most of his time training with the NBA squad.
The glamour franchise is convinced of the German and his skills, as shown by the fact that Bonga immediately got a guaranteed three-year contract as a second-round pick. “The Lakers think that my size and skills make me a good fit with the team,” Bonga reported. “For example, when it comes to taking over each other’s opponents in defense. I’m a flexible player.”
The teenager has enough mentors. Both LeBron James and playmaker Rajon Rondo are some of the things the former Frankfurt native wants to learn from. “Such a possibility doesn’t come often and I want to use it,” Bonga knows.
At the moment his focus is mainly on ball handling and his throw, and the German is planning to add at least 10 kilos at a height of 2.03 metres and currently 93 kilos. The Lakers even hired a strength trainer for Bonga.
Bonga was drafted to position 39 by the Philadelphia 76ers, but was immediately passed on to the Los Angeles Lakers. The former Skyliners player then played seven games in the Summer League. There the versatile playmaker played 2.1 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 9.0 minutes per game.
