MLB: 25:4! Washington destroys New York

After numerous trade rumors had recently spread around the Washington Nationals, they responded after the trade deadline with an offensive outbreak against the New York Mets and set franchise records on both sides. They beat the Amazons 25-4.

After the Nationals had already made seven runs in the first inning, they added three more in each of the following four innings before adding another six in the eighth – but against Infielder Jose Reyes, who had to pitch to save the bulls. This makes Nationals the first team in eleven years to score at least 25 runs in a game. In 2007, the Texas Rangers destroyed the Baltimore Orioles 30-3.

Each Nationals starter scored at least two runs and twelve players scored at least one hit. As a team, the Nats got 26 hits. Both the runs and the hits are franchise records. Likewise, the 25 runs are the most New York Mets have ever won in a game.

In addition, these 25 runs are also the most for a team without a designated hitter since August 1995, when the Chicago Cubs scored 26 runs against the Colorado Rockies. What’s more, Nationals are the first team without DH to receive at least two runs from all nine starters since the New York Yankees in May 1936.

“I think every team needs games like this,” said Ryan Zimmerman, who became Nationals franchise hits leader with his first inning hit. “Games like this are fun. Obviously we did a lot of things right at the beginning and then we just added to it. Hopefully we can take that swing and have some more fun.”

The Nationals came down on Mets starter Steven Matz in the first inning. The left-handed player got eight hits and all seven runs. He threw 32 pitches and only made two outs before he was released.
