MLB: Premature end of the season for Giants-Star

The San Francisco Giants will be without right-handed Johnny Cueto for the rest of the season and beyond. The starting pitcher will undergo a Tommy John surgery.

At the beginning of the week, manager Bruce Bochy had already stated that elbow reconstruction at Cueto after pain in the elbow “for a long time” was likely. According to the team, the procedure will be performed in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Cueto recently came off the Disabled List after an elbow injury and has not won a game since. He is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA over 53 innings this season.

Cueto signed a six-year contract worth 130 million dollars before the 2016 season and was convincing in his first season (18-5, 2.79 ERA), but has since been thrown back by several injuries.

After the Tommy John Surgery he will not be able to pitch again until the end of 2019 at the earliest, but a return to the 2020 season is more likely.
