MLB: Yankees – Blue Jays: Early Bird leads Bombers to the sweep

The New York Yankees (78-46) scored a 10-2 home win over Toronto Blue Jays (55-69) at Yankee Stadium. After an early tour, the Bronx Bombers fought back. First Baseman Greg Bird managed a historic Grand Slam, while starter J.A. Happ resembled a Yankee great of yore.

The Blue Jays got off to a good start and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning through Randal Grichuk’s solo Homun. But the joy did not last for long, for the landlords fought back tremendously. In the lower half of the opening inning they made a total of six runs. After the frame was opened by walks by Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton, Greg Bird finished it essential – with a Grand Slam for 6:1.

Kendrys Morales shortened for the guests with a solo shot in the sixth inning, but again the Yankees responded furiously with four more runs to the final decision in a rainy Yankee stadium.

The victory also gave New York a sweep in the weekend series after winning the games on Friday and Saturday.

The Blue Jays were already in the bullpen in the first inning, the Yankees only in the sixth, after starter J.A. Happ (2 ER) had finished after two outs. It was 6-1 for New York. Finally, the Jays-Pen didn’t last long enough and broke apart completely in the sixth frame, gave up four more runs. The Yankees, on the other hand, had nothing left to burn.

After the early guided tour through the guests, the Yankees remained cool and responded directly with a big inning. Through the six runs directly to the start, they also pulled the tooth of a blue-jay team, whose season is essentially over, early.

The Yankee First Baseman is gradually gaining momentum. After weakening for much of the month – and year – he now hit his second home run within two days. He is also only the fourth Yankees-First Baseman with several Grand Slams in one season. The others: Lou Gehrig, Don Mattingly and Mark Teixeira.

For the left-hander it was the tenth start this season and at the same time the worst and shortest. He didn’t make it out of the first inning (2/3 IP) and gave six earned runs. Not only did he immediately give up the early lead of the Blue Jays, he also dug a hole for his team from which they could not get out again.
