The New York Jets seem to be going all-in with Sam Darnold: The rookie quarterback is reported to start right at the beginning of the regular season for Gang Green.
This is reported by ESPN jet insider Rich Cimini. Darnold will continue to receive most of the first team snaps in training and was also allowed to play the preseason match against Washington right from the start. The plan, Cimini continues, is to let Darnold also start in Week 1 of the Regular Season – should he not show clear setbacks in the third Preseason game against the Giants.
Two weeks before the start of the season, the jets have perhaps the most interesting quarterback situation in the entire league. Darnold as the number 3 overall pick is without a doubt the future and has apparently shown those responsible in the preseason enough to recommend himself for immediate use.
Behind him, however, Free Agent Teddy Bridgewater was able to show that he is fit again after a long injury break and has left a very good impression in the preseason so far. In addition, Jets veteran Josh McCown, who was once considered the clear Week 1 starter, has now taken on more of a mentoring role.
Should Darnold really be a starter after the third Preseason game, the jets should be all the more anxious to get rid of Bridgewater via trade.
