MLB: 20 year old makes historical debut

The Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Monday. Another 20 year old made his debut and made history.

Before the game, the Braves activated Bryse Wilson, a 20-year-old right-hander of Triple-A Gwinnett. And the youngster pitched five shutout innings with five strikeouts. In total, the Braves Pitching Staff only played seven hits in the game.

This was Wilson’s first MLB victory and also the youngest starting pitcher (20 years, 243 days) ever to win a 1-0 match in his debut.

Wilson is the third 20-year-old pitcher to make his Braves debut this season. Previously, starter Mike Soroka and Kolby Allard had already done this. The last team to have had three starters in a season before their 21st birthday were the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 with Hall-of-Famer Catfish Hunter, Don Buschhorn and Ron Tompkins.

The only run in the game was provided by Nick Markakis, who brought Freddie Freeman home with his RBI single in the first inning.

Center Fielder Ender Inciarte also played a major role in this result, with a precise 95.7-mile-an-hour shot of Base Runner Adeiny Hechavarria on the Home Plate in the seventh inning.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Inciarte: “I think you can compare this to beating a home run in a crucial situation. It’s similar to stealing a home run. It’s a lot of fun.”

By winning, the Braves expanded their lead in the National League East to include Philadelphia Phillies, who were free to play. In addition, a series of four games of bankruptcy ended for the Braves.
