There could be some rule changes in the NBA in the coming season. According to media reports, the Competition Committee has raised three rules that could be changed, including that the European-style shot clock will only be reset to 14 instead of 24 seconds after an offensive rebound.
This is reported by Adrian Wojnarowksi of ESPN. The General Managers of the League have already been informed by a memo. The NBA Competition Committee has proposed that the shotclock be reset to 14 seconds instead of 24 seconds after an offensive rebound.
The league hopes that there will be more throws in the game, especially towards the end of the games. FIBA already installed this rule in 2014, the NBA experimented with it most recently in the G-League, WNBA and the Summer League.
Furthermore, changes to the Clear Path rule are proposed. There should be three variations of what a Clear Path Foul is:
If a Clear Path Foul is whistled, the fouled team gets two free throws and the ball. This adaptation of the rule is intended to clarify what a Clear Path Foul is. In addition, more so-called Euro fouls are to be stopped if the defending team simply fouls to stop the fast break.
The third proposed amendment concerns the definition of the “Hostile Act”. According to the rule book, this is an action between two players that does not pass as basketball play or if one player deliberately wants to inflict damage on another player. The NBA wants to extend the definition of the Hostile Act a bit so that referees have more chances to review such offences via replay.
On 20 and 21 September, the Board of Governors will vote on the three proposals. It takes a two-thirds majority to go through these changes.
