The Detroit Tigers (55-82) won the last game of the four-game series at the New York Yankees (86-51) with 11:7. Rookie Victor Reyes showed an outstanding performance with a few important hits at the right time. The series ended in a 2-2 split.
As in the first three games of the series, the Tigers took the early lead. In the first inning, Second Baseman Nike Goodrum made it 1:0 with an RBI single. Center Fielder Aaron Hicks played a solo homun and designated hitter Gary Sanchez played a 2-1 RBI single.
The Tigers were equalized by Victor Reyes before the game tipped in the fourth inning. Reyes took a 3-2 lead with an RBI double before Center Fielder JaCoby Jones took the lead with a 2-run double to 5-2. Shortly afterwards, Nicholas Castellanos added a 2-Run-Homerun 7-2.
The Yankees ran Luke Voit’s home run 7-3, but Reyes’ home run in the sixth inning restored the old gap. But the Yankees made it really exciting in the eighth inning. They made two runs through RBI single and loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Greg Bird then hit a fly ball to the warning track, but Reyes caught it on the wall for the final out of the inning. In the ninth inning, however, the guests did three more runs through RBI hits by Ronny Rodriguez and Dawel Lugo.
But also the hosts weren’t finished yet and scored two more runs with a 2-run single by Gleyber Torres.
The Yankees were involved until Jones’ at-bat. But then Jones showed himself ice-cold and provided a 5-2 lead through a 2-run double with two outs against Lynn, for which the game was over. A little later Castellanos added a 2-Run-Homerun.
The fourth inning was essential for the decision in the game. Until then it was 2-2, but then the starter of the Yankees collapsed. Lynn gave four of his nine hits in this sequence. The Tigers scored five runs and took off.
The Right Fielder got one of his few starts these days and made the best of it. He had four hits (4-4), the first three of which were good for Extra Bases (2 2B, HR) and each provided a run (3 RBI). He provided for the 2-2 equaliser in the meantime and also put the team in front with 3-2. A tour that Detroit didn’t give away after that.
The right-hander (3 2/3 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 6 SO) simply did not get into step. From the beginning he had problems with his location, let too many pitches over the record and had to pay for it several times. Not a good performance by Lynn.
