The New York Mets’ 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday saw Jacob deGrom do something no one has done in 33 years: The right-hander made his 24th start in a row with three or less runs.
DeGrom, who leads the Major Leagues with a 1.68 ERA, only allowed one run on two hits (6 SO) over six innings in Dodger Stadium and thus equaled ex-Met Dwight “Doc” Gooden. He also had 24 such starts in series in 1985 – and finished the season with a 1.53 ERA. This is the lowest level since 1969, the year the Mound was raised to its current level.
“He is the best pitcher in baseball this season,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway praised his Ace: “He is a man of courage and determination. He just won’t take a beating.”
But it wasn’t enough for deGrom to win the statistics, because until the ninth inning it was 1:1, before Brandon Nimmo decided the game in favour of the Mets. The Outfielder managed a 3-Run-Homerun as Pinch-Hitter against Reliever Kenta Maeda, from which the hosts did not recover any more.
