Dennis Schröder’s DBB team has missed the final at the VGT Supercup in Hamburg. Despite an outstanding Schröder, they defeated Turkey 79:100. For the Turks, the NBA players Furkan Korkmaz and Cedi Osman were particularly convincing.
The DBB selection was completed by Dennis Schröder (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Maxi Kleber (Dallas Mavericks) with two NBA players, Ismet Akpinar, Niels Giffey and Maik Zirbes completed the Starting Five. But also the Turks offered with Cedi Osman (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Ersan Ilyasova (Milwaukee Bucks) two NBA players, Furkan Korkmaz (Philadelphia 76ers) even came from the bank.
That Osman started really well, but Schröder and Zirbes held against it with their scoring. Especially the centre of Crvena Zvezda convinced early and even sprinkled in a long two. In the middle of the quarter the Thunder player took over for the DBB.
After two threesomes in a row, the Guard served Giffey, who also scored from outside (21:15). The DBB side made a really good game, especially in the first quarter, but had no answer for Osman. With the siren, the Cavs forward to the end of the quarter with his fourth threesome shortened to 26:29 from the Turkish point of view.
When Schröder went to the bank, however, the German game began to stall. Over six minutes the Rödl selection remained without field goal, only a worth seeing Schröder-Alley Oop on glue ended the dry spell (32:36). However, the Turks set themselves off more and more (as Team 11/19 trio in half-time one), as Korkmaz was now also hot. The two NBA wings had already collected 28 points at the break and were thus the guarantors for the Turkish 51:41 lead.
However, the Germans could not reach the third quarter because a Turk was repeatedly released at the perimeter. After a time-out, however, things got a little better as the litters were better defended. The pick’n’roll between Schröder and Zirbes brought relief on the offensive, followed by steals that led to light points. Turkey entered the final quarter with a narrow lead (68:70).
Schröder now took a shorter break, but the Turks now also got production from the previously pale Ilyasova. The German star now wanted to force it too much, also the throws became shorter, so that the Turks led again four minutes before the end with 14 points (74:88). The DBB team did not give up, but the Turks were in rhythm and always had an answer. The result was a 79:100 bankruptcy for the Germans.
For the Germans, Schröder excelled with a strong 32 points (12/20 FG) and 14 assists. Apart from the Guard, only Zirbes (15) and Kleber (12) scored two-digit points. The Turks were especially dangerous from a distance, especially by Korkmaz (23) and Osman (20). Bucks-Big Ilyasova (17) also achieved a double-digit yield.
In the match for third place, the Germans will now face Italy at 5.30 pm on Saturday, who surprisingly lost to the Czech Republic at 80:87. The final between Turkey and the Czechs will take place at 8 pm.
