MLB: Is NY getting around luxury tax for the first time?

The New York Yankees are on course to pay no luxury tax at all for the first time since their introduction in 2003. Probably only two teams will be charged extra this year.

Only the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals are on the verge of paying luxury tax, according to the Commissioners office on August 31. This was reported by the Associated Press.

According to this, the Yankees have a payroll of 192.1 million dollars, after 178.8 million at the beginning of the season. Even with performance bonuses that Pitcher CC Sabathia and Infielder Neil Walker may still have to pay and $3,000 a day for September callups, the team would remain below the $197 million mark.

Previously, the Yankees had paid luxury taxes in a row for 15 years. This raised a total of $341 million.

The Red Sox payroll at the end of August was $238.4 million. They would have to pay a tax of 11.3 million dollars. Nationals, on the other hand, is 203.9 million, which would result in a tax of 2.1 million.

For the first time in five years, the Los Angeles Dodgers were below the threshold after paying nearly $150 million over the same period. They currently stand at a payroll of 194.5 million.
