MLB: Miami must be holding on to managers

Don Mattingly is also expected to be manager of the Miami Marlins in 2019. This was confirmed by CEO Derek Jeter more or less directly at the request of reporters.

“Will he be back in 2019,” Jeter asked on Thursday and replied: “He is under contract. Yes.”

The Marlins will complete Jeter’s first year as CEO as last in the National League East. Mattingly is in his third year in Miami and has a balance sheet of 215-259 (.454).

Mattingly has already indicated in the past that he accepts the challenge of building a new, young Marlins team that is undergoing major rebuilding. A franchise that has not had a positive balance at the end of the season since 2009 – the longest dry spell in the MLB – and has also been waiting for playoff participation since 2003.

“What you can count on with Derek is that he’ll do what he says,” said Mattingly. “He talked about rebuilding the Minor League system in the right way. I don’t think there’s anything he talked about publicly and didn’t put it into practice. You trust what he says and what he will do.”

Jeter said about the expected failure this season: “This is the ultimate yardstick for a team – wins and defeats. But this is a transitional year for us to learn as much as possible about this organization.”

In addition, the Marlins will end the year with the worst audience average of the MLB. With an average of less than 10,000 viewers, this is the 13th time in the last 14 years that they are at the end of the list in the National League. Since the Montreal Expos 2004, no team has had such a low audience average at the end of a season.

“This is something we need to improve,” said Jeter. “But considering where we started, it just goes uphill.”
