Kawhi Leonard was introduced to the Toronto Raptors on Monday, speaking publicly for the first time in several months. However, the two-time defensive player of the year did not want to answer questions about his long-term future.
Leonard was traded from the Spurs to the Raptors this summer, but he only has one year left and the rumor that he wants to move to Los Angeles next summer is still alive. At first, however, he wants to concentrate on the new season, Leonard said.
“I want to play here,” said Leonard. “I came here with an open mind. I want to achieve a lot here and concentrate on this year. “If you focus too much on the future, you stumble over the present.”
Leonard left the Spurs in bad shape after only 9 games last season and staying away from the team in the playoffs. San Antonio accepted his trade request and finally sent him to Canada with Danny Green for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Pöltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick.
“I don’t regret anything,” Leonard said about last season. “But I want to focus on this team now, on the journey we have before us today. I don’t want to look back.” Leonard continued: “I’m coming to a great city that loves basketball.
Meanwhile Leonard gave a curious answer to the question if he could describe himself a little. “I’m a fun guy,” Leonard said with a laugh. “I obviously love basketball. I mean, you’re gonna have to ask me more questions. I can’t fool you.”
