The San Francisco 49ers have to give up Richard Sherman for several weeks. The cornerback injured his calf during his defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Garoppolo will miss a few weeks due to the calf injury. The Niners will become increasingly thin in the secondary, against the strong offense of the Los Angeles Chargers Jimmie Ward and Ahkello Witherspoon will probably occupy the cornerback spots on Sunday.
For Sherman, the loss also means concrete financial losses: In his contract with the Niners – which he negotiated himself – the cornerback has a bonus of two million dollars, which is made up of his appointments to the active squad. $125,000 is the cost of every game he misses. His bonus for playing at least 90 percent of the defense snaps (one million dollars) is probably no longer achievable.
The Niners, however, are heading into a more than uncertain remaining season. With Jimmy Garoppolo’s serious injury, all playoff hopes in San Francisco are gone, 49ers fans are now facing a similar time to last year.
