Cycling: Valverde wins gold in Tyrol World Championship

The Spaniard Alejandro Valverde won the men’s road race (258 km) of the cycling world championship in Innsbruck on Sunday.

The experienced doping veteran won a four-man sprint ahead of Romain Bardet (FRA), Michael Woods (CAN) and Tom Dumoulin (NED). For Valverde it is the first World Championship title after several silver and bronze medals. In 2006 in Salzburg he had become third.

Michael Gogl was the best Austrian and placed 45th. The Slovakian defending champion Peter Sagan had to give up 4,700 meters of altitude difference like many others at the final climax of the title fights.
