Ice Hockey: NHL Global Series: Oilers beat Cologne sharks

National ice hockey striker Leon Draisaitl and NHL club Edmonton Oilers have won the show match at their home club Kölner Haie 4:3 (1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:0) after extra time and have narrowly gained the upper hand in the family duel with his father Peter. As coach of the sharks, he could not prevent the seventh duel between a German host and a NHL team from being lost.

“It was much hornier than I had imagined. The best ice hockey fans in the world are in Cologne,” said Leon Draisaitl immediately after the end of the game: “It was really fun. Superstar Connor McDavid added at Sport1: “That was a hard piece of work, but I expected it to be the same. You did great. It was a great experience for us to play here in Leon’s hometown.”

Leon Draisaitls national team colleague Tobias Rieder (12th), newcomer of the Oilers, Milan Lucic (28th), Ty Rattie (46th) and Ryan Strome (63rd) in the Overtime scored the goals for the five-time Stanley Cup winner from Canada in front of 18,400 spectators, who will play against the New Jersey Devils in Gothenburg/Sweden on Saturday for the first points match of the new NHL season.

Draisaitl succeeded in creating a template. For the convincing sharks were Jason Akeson (22.), Moritz Müller (45.) and Ben Hanowski (53.) successful.

The game was part of the NHL Global Series. Leon Draisaitl (22) was born in Cologne and played for the sharks as a teenager. He has been with Oilers since 2014.
