Investors from Quebec want to set up a new NBA franchise in Montreal. However, the league currently has no interest in another team.
“Although the NBA and the Commissioner have made it clear to us that there are currently no plans to expand the league,” Michael Fortier, former Quebec senator, told Kalina Laframboise of Global News. “We have made the decision to prepare for expansion until it is finally time, because we believe it will happen.”
The press conference took place following the Toronto Raptors’ match against the Brooklyn Nets. During the preseason, the teams duelled in the Bell Center in Montreal. The team around superstar Kawhi Leonard shot down the New Yorkers with 118:91.
Montreal is one of the 20 most popular metropolises in North America, although it was only in possession of a top franchise in the four major sports leagues of the USA. Since the loss of its MLB team, the Montreal Expos, in 2004, the city has been striving to expand into one of the leagues. The Montreal Canadiens from the NHL are the only team from one of the four top leagues.
