Handball: Club World Championship: Foxes miss third triumph

The Füchse Berlin missed their third triumph at the unofficial Club World Cup in Doha, Qatar. The winner of 2015 and 2016 had to admit defeat again to FC Barcelona with 24:29 (12:13) in the new edition of last year’s final.

The Berliners could comfort themselves with 200,000 US dollars for second place, the Catalans received 400,000 US dollars for their fourth success. The best fox thrower was Jacob Holm with eight hits.

The team of coach Velimir Petkovic, who took part in the prestigious event thanks to a wildcard, managed to balance the match until 15:15 (34th) in the second half. Then Barcelona made the decision with an intermediate sprint and took the lead 24:16 (45th). Bitter for Berlin: Mattias Zachrisson injured himself in the second half and had to be brought out of the hall with the help of sports director Volker Zerbe.

In the semi-final of the Super Globe, the Berliners had prevailed against hosts Al Sadd (26:20), Barcelona defeated Champions League winner Montpellier HB (37:30).
