Ice Hockey: DEL: Schwenningen fires former national coach

The Schwenninger Wild Wings from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) have given trainer Pat Cortina immediate leave of absence and reacted to the sporting downswing. With only seven points from the first 15 games of the season, Schwenningen are last in the table before the two upcoming matches against the Straubing Tigers and the Eisbären Berlin.

“We had many discussions with the team council and manager Jürgen Rumrich”, said Michael Werner, managing partner of Wild Wings: “After these discussions we came to the conclusion that we had to set an impulse”.

For the next two games, Rumrich will be the interim coach, supported by co-coach Petteri Väkiparta and goalkeeper coach Ilpo Kauhanen.

Born in Canada, he previously trained the EHC Red Bull Munich in the DEL and the German national ice hockey team from 2012 to 2015.
