NBA: Davis hopes for boogie return to Pelicans

After his Achilles tendon rupture, DeMarcus Cousins surprisingly joined the Golden State Warriors this summer, but they won’t have the financial means to hold him next summer. Anthony Davis is therefore already hoping for a return of his former fellow player.

“He’ll be a free agent next summer. I hope we can reunite then,” Davis told ESPN after New Orleans recently played and lost to the Warriors. Although speculations about Davis’ own future have been going on for quite some time, the Big Man wants to concentrate only on the current situation.

“I still have two years and after that we’ll see what happens,” said Davis, who still has a player option ($28.8 million) for the 20/21 season. “For me it’s about being the most dominant player in the league right now and helping this team win games. You hear the rumors, the talk. But that’s not coming from me. I’m here to be a Pelican and win a championship.”

Meanwhile, there are some complications with the return of cousins. New Orleans would have to do without its own free agents Nikola Mirotic and Julius Randle in the coming summer, and the franchise was coldly hit by the centre’s farewell in the summer. But Davis would be interested – and the Warriors make no secret of the fact that they won’t have cousins for long.

“We said it from the beginning when we brought him in,” said coach Steve Kerr. “This is a one-year contract. We don’t have any money for him next summer, and he knows it. We therefore hope that we will win a title together this year and that he will be able to sign a good contract elsewhere next year”.

Cousins hasn’t debuted for the Warriors yet, his comeback on the court should take quite some time. Kerr, however, asserted that the progress of the well-known newcomer was very promising.
