Ski-Alpin: Lindsey Vonn postpones career end

Lindsey Vonn doesn’t want to end her alpine skiing career after this season, but plans to extend it by a weekend next winter. The US American announced on Friday in a video message via Youtube that she still wants to compete in the three speed races at the beginning of December 2019 in Lake Louise as the end of her active career.

Vonn had celebrated 18 of her 82 World Cup victories so far in the Canadian winter sports resort. This weekend she misses the races because of a recent knee injury in training. “I’m going to come back to Lake Louise again, that’s important to me,” said the 34-year-old now.

In her last World Cup winter Vonn wants to break the record of the Swede Ingemar Stenmark, who won 86 races. By not taking the two downhill runs and a Super-G in Lake Louise, the US star misses three of her best chances of approaching the record.

“Whether I break the record or not has nothing to do with me coming back next year,” Vonn said. “Lake Louise has always been my race, even some locals call it Lake Lindsey. I’d regret it all my life if I missed this last chance to drive out of the Lake Louise launch house. Hopefully break the record this year and don’t have to worry about it next year and can only have fun.”

Vonn didn’t give a date for her comeback. “Probably in a few weeks,” she said, she’ll be able to race again.
